Today in class we still worked on cached pages. We did a worksheet on it to help get a better understanding of what it is. I enjoyed learning about the different ways google helps you to make an effective search.

Today in class we talked about cached pages and what they mean. I never knew how useful they were and what i could really do with it. Cached page simply means it takes a screen shot of the page so if the site wont work you can just cache it to look at it.

I have just finished my work sheet and have come to the conclusion that google is still the best search engine with its smart and easy to use interface. You can easily search on the regular search bar or go to the advance search which is just as easy to use. The other search engines just can not compete.

Well today in class we are doing a worksheet comparing meta search engines and search engines. We are using the phrase feature to determine which one is the most effective. I didnt get to finish so i am going to have to take it home and finish it there.

Today we had another sub and i am again going to work on my blogs. Im catching up on some other work i missed for other classes since i am done with my blog here. I enjoy making word clouds because i can use my creatvitiy to make beautiful word cloud.

Today in class we had a sub. We were in the computer room just working on our blogs and finishing up work. It was nice to just have a period devoted to just working on my blogs. I was already up to date but i am going to do some more for extra credit.

This will be my third wordle. Im having fun making them and the different ways i can make it personal are awesome.  I can change the font, backround and colors for my word cloud. Having fun making wordles; theres no better monday.

Today in class we are making another worlde. These are fun little word clouds that we make and its quick and easy. It will be showing my keywords and it will get rid of the stop words. Thats pretty awesome that it can do that because it takes a lot of word if i had to do it by hand.

Since it was a short week on wens we looked at other peoples videos. It was very intresting to see what everybody put in there videos. They were all very well done and it was nice to be able to share mine with the rest of the class. I enjoyed wens and hope that there are more lessons like it.

Today in class we making word clouds. We are using a website called wordle to create the word cloud. This is my first time doing this so i am pretty excited to make this post. This wordle will show the keywords and remove all of the stop words so i want to see if it will work.

Well today in class we learned about the unused words or words that do not get checked when researching on the interent. Words like he she and they dont get used so they are basically pointless when you research topics. Use only the mian words and the words that matter. It is important to know this when researching a topic.

Well today in class we learned how an excolpedia is one of the best places to find infomation and also learned about synonmys. We used thesaures.com to look up symonyms for our desired topic. I used animal as my key word and found many results from my research.

Well today was the day of the quiz and i made sure that i studied the night before. I felt confident going into it and think i did really good. I remembered the hint that she showed us for the 1st and 7th step and from there i kept going. Then we went back to the lab to finish making our videos. Mine video has two people in it and is pretty complex if i say so myself.

Today in class we were still reviewing the seven steps for our internet research strategy. We were preparing for our quiz on it tommrow. I have to make sure i study tonight to be confident for tommrows quiz. I remember a little hint that MS. S taught  us that both the 1st and 7th step start with define and refine so its an easy way to remember them.

today we leanrned the sixth step of the internet reseach stategy. the step was evulte search results and we used a worksheet to help us understand the step. we used the gale database and looked up a certain cartoons that perrained to our topic. i found a topic on food and it was very intresting.

today i looked up cyber bullying in taiwan. ifs becoming a bigger problem because the tecnolgy is growing rapidly there. more and more kids are takeing thirr life because the problem is increasing. i wasnt able to find the article on google and i wasnt shocked at this because of the fact i found thr article in a private database.

today i looked up the one hundred greatest websites that no body knos about. it was intresting to see all the intresting sites that no one knows about. i wasnt able to find the article on goofle because it was in a private database. it was an intresting article that i enjoed reading.

Today i found an article that related to bullying. The effect on bullying can have a harsh effect on the victim. With all the recent suicides with anti gay bullying its time to take action more than ever. Bullying can easly cause suicide thoughts and that a major effect of bullying. It was sad to read about these young kids who took their life because of other kids bullying them.

Today i looked up the dallas cowboys and the gale database. I found 2943 related articles and found one article that intrested me. It was about their recent struggles and now that thier qb is about it makes winning for them that much harder. The article spoke the truth and i thought that it was hard for a cowboy fan to read this.

Today we went to library nycenet.edu and looked under the gale database. We used the keyword adolescents to guide our search and from that i found youth. I looked up personal naritives and found an interesting article about a young child orphan.

Today we did more with the invisible web with a work sheet. We went to libary.edu which is the cuny library. We looked up information and used that info to answer questions. I was confused about what to do but my partner glenn got me back on track and helped a lot.

Well today we learned more about the brooklyn college library website. On that website there is a web resource that costs about 50,000 a year but its worth it for all the infromation it stores. Its know as the invisible web. Meaning you wouldnt be able to find it by just searching google. We used that resource to complete a worksheet we were given.

well today we learned about library websites. According to Ms. S the four best cuny schools are Hunter, city, Baruch and Brooklyn College. And Brooklyn has the best library because its the newest and has the most updated books. It was redone sometime in the past 10 years and there website is also redone. They have a lot of great resources that you would't be able to find otherwise.

Today we did a worksheet in the lab that involoved us comparing breadcrumbs of different web direcotires. I did it wrong so i will have to redo the sheet but now i know the work and what a breadcrumb accually is. Directories are easy to use but in terms of quickness a search engines wins in that department. It takes longer and you really shouldnt use a directory if your searching for somthing specfic.

Today we learned more about the different types of search tools. There are four different types of search tools with the most common being search engines and directories. The yahoo directoiry was the first and is considered the best because the sites because the sites are hand picked making them all valid sites.

Well today we learned about directories. A directory is different from in a search engine in that a directory works on sites put in different catogories which are hand picked. The major directory site is yahoo and most people don't even know that yahoo has a directory. Its not as popular as a search engine but it gives you less results to look through.

Even though there wasnt a reading assignment it was the weekend and i studied my notes for our test on tuesday. I went through all my past homeworks as well as redoing the quizes to see if i could get everyone right. I had a lot of success and i feel confident for the test tmmrw.

Well today we learned about fake websites and how convincing they can be. We visited the tree octopus website which was very well made and looked convincing. They even sold t shirts hats and other novelty items. Its clear that someone is putting a lot of effect into making this seem real. The problem i had with the web site is that a lot of the photo's were not well made. They could have photoshoped them better to make it seem more real. You could tell that the octopus didn't belong there.

Well today we went over the country extensions that you would use. For example us is the united states and uk is the united kingdom. So if you were looking up schools in the uk it would be sch.uk. Granted you would put the school name in front of it but thats how you would do it. We learned about 15 countries including Canada which is ca and mexico which is mx.

Well today we just went over what it means to get r.e.a.l. Getting real is a way to examine a web page to see if the information is real or not. The R stands for read the url. E is examine the  content of the web page. A is ask about the author and L is look at the links. With these tools you can accuratlly tell if this is a reputable site or not. This helps in the case where you need to make sure that the information you are getting is correct. There have been Cases where kids have went on bias websites and got the wrong information as Ms. S was telling us.

Well today we were reviewing for tuesdays test. I get most of the work. I did have a little problem understanding the site: command at first but my partner glenn was there to help me. We did the worksheet together and we got the work done quickly and efficiently. I feel confident about the test and im sure i will do well.

How is the information you learned applicable to your other class assignments? How is this class helping you with research in your other classes?


Its intresting that as we were learning how to make a virtual index i got my first project in goverment. It happens to be a research project which is a perfect time to use the new skills that i have learned. I can now find information quicker and easier and now have the nessesary tools and insight to create a virtual index.

Well, i just took a gander at Glenn's blog and even after knowing him for 4 years know i did learn some new things about him. He enjoys the water and likes shoes. He's a big fan of john mayer and jay z and according to his blog post he lost his glasses. But sure enough Glenn found them.

Well today I learned about a different way to make a virtual index. When you put site: then your website and a key word it comes up with every site that has your keyword in it. This makes it easyer when you are trying to look something specific up. We did a worksheet to help us practice the site command. I will use this tool when i am doing any type of research paper.

Well today we learned a more advanced way of narrowing searches from the previous day. Today we learned how to narrow searches on sites from different countries. For example searching shoes stores in the uk. It would be link:.com. uk + sneakers. Then it would narrow you results down making it easy to find exactly what you are looking for. I found interesting because I always thought that you had to search through the thousands of search results google always gives you. This tool makes searching the web faster and easier.

Well today in class we leaned how to narrow down your choice results in google. By putting Link: and then your selected extension and what you want to look up it now shows for example all .com websites with cars in the name. This is useful if your looking for something about medicine and you want to make sure it is a approved site.

So far in class i have learned a lot about the internet and how it works. Like what a domain name is and what an extension is. I didn't know that the main reason sites are on top of the search is because they paid for them.
I always thought that it was because i that site had the most views therefor it was the most popular. Everything i learned was new to me. Learning that the internet search runs on a bunch of Algorithms. When you type something in on a search engine, key words are read and your searches are brought up. Today i learned about how wikipedia is not always a trust worthy site because anyone can change whats on there. So the best way to look something up is using bratanica the Encyclopedia.
